Plate heat exchangers

In the previous post, we discussed the types of heat exchangers that are used in today’s air handling units (AHUs).

Now let’s look at the purpose, design, and different types of plate heat exchangers.

The purpose of a plate heat exchanger is to recover heat from the exhaust air stream, thereby reducing the energy consumption for the heating of the supply air stream.

A plate heat exchanger is a set of plates with a special profile, arranged at a certain distance from each other and enclosed in a casing. This configuration allows the creation of a heat transfer matrix with a parallel arrangement of channels, ensuring efficient energy exchange between two airflows.

Main types of plate heat exchangers:

1️⃣ by flow direction:

  • counter-flow;
  • cross-flow.

2️⃣ by the type of energy transfer:

  • sensible – with the transfer of sensible energy of dry air;
  • enthalpy – with the transfer of sensible energy of dry air + with the transfer of latent energy of water vapor.

In the following posts, we will introduce you to the range of plate heat exchangers from ZERN ENGINEERING.
